Hi,
this 'tntype' photograph of William H. Bonney, better known as Billy The Kid was expected to fetch around $300,000 at auction but finally the hammer fell at $2.3Million earlier this week!
Billy the Kid, also known as William Henry McCarty, Henry Antrim and William H. Bonney (Allegedly born November 23, 1859 – died July 14, 1881) was a 19th-century American frontier outlaw and gunman who participated in the Lincoln County War. According to legend, he killed 21 men, but he is generally accepted to have killed between four and nine.
There was nothing heroic about his death when he was gunned down in poor light in a friend's house by Pat Garrett.
The photograph, being a 'tintype', is mirrored on the vertical axis of reality thus he was in fact right handed which corrects earlier beliefs that he was a 'lefty' as followed by Paul Newman.
This is the ONLY known authenticated picture and was given to a friend of his and has remained ever since in the family.
