Alston:

At a height of over 1,000 feet in the far reaches of the Pennines, this is one of England's highest market towns. Alston is a lively bustling place of steeply rising narrow streets, several still slippery with ancient cobbles. It is very picturesque with a stunning market square and a distinctive covered market cross. Much of its charm lies in its many stone buildings dating from the 17th-century.

The stone built Angel Pub dates from 1611 with an adjoining stone cottage thought to be from around 1687. Behind these buildings lies St.Augustine's Church built in 1869, this occupies the site of an earlier church. It is a handsome church building with a decorative tower and spire.

The church is surrounded by a gently sloping grassed tree lined churchyard covered with graves and tombs from hundreds of years. Inside there is some spectacular stained glass and the chancel screen is interesting in that it serves as the War Memorial to the men of Alston who fell in World War I.

There is an interesting 16th-century clock from Dilston Hall, the home of Earl Derwentwater. The clock has only one hand, and a bell which came from Earl Derwentwater, it was recast in 1845, and now has a peel of ten bells.

The church is the focal point of the village, its churchyard being skirted with ancient cottages and terraced houses.

Alston is on the River South Tyne, and a track of the South Tynedale Heritage Railway. It is wonderful walking country with part of the Pennine Way passing through the town taking you to Greenhead and Hadrian's Wall. The beautiful Gilderdale Forest, Troutbeck and Milburn Forest offer some of the most glorious scenery in Cumbria, they are also renowned as habitats for many species of wildlife.

This is a wonderful place to be at any time of year, the air is crisp and clean, and there are memorable views in every direction. Major repair work has been carried out within the last six years, and the building is in a good state of preservation.

We are a small rural community known for our warm, friendly welcome. Our lively band of faithful and dedicated members help our community to grow in faith and vitality.

Although we mostly come from Northmoor and neighbouring villages in the Lower Windrush valley, some of us travel from further afield, including Witney, Pewsey and St Albans. Our established choral tradition (Haydn, Mozart, Palestrina) supports our worship and prayer: we welcome gifted musicians and beginners alike to join us.

I am proud to say that I knew Elisabeth Beckett over many years.

Elisabeth Beckett

Elisabeth Beckett, who has died, intrigued us with her knowledge and mystical insights and immeasurably enriched our understanding of the British Constitution.

By her example she showed what it means to fearlessly defend justice and freedom.

We spoke with her several times by phone and first wrote about her a little more than a year ago, after she had discovered that her local council’s money was being used to fund a European Union-dictated regional assembly.

To protest the expenditure of money for a foreign-mandated assembly that she understood had no standing under the British Constitution, Elisabeth refused to pay her Council taxes, and appealed the matter to the High Court.

In response the government brought all its power to bear on Elisabeth, who at the time was 83. She received numerous letters from council officers and visits from bailiffs to the Old Vicarage in Alston, Cumbria.

The mother of two daughters and two sons, Elisabeth was the daughter of Ronald Brymer Beckett, an administrator and judge in India, and Norah Anderson Beckett. In a second career, as an art historian, Ronald Beckett published a magisterial edition of the correspondence of John Constable.

Last year, Elisabeth laid charges of treason against Gordon Brown at the Newcastle Magistrates Court on the ground that the Prime Minister had forced The Queen against her Coronation Oath to agree the Lisbon Treaty (the EU Constitution).

These were exhausting trips for Elisabeth, who must have been growing weak even then from leukaemia.

At the time we were afraid that the wheels of justice would grind exceedingly slow, and so it has proved.

Elisabeth's last act, from her deathbed, was to write a letter to The Queen. We published the letter, which reflects Elisabeth's devotion to her country's freedom and her disappointment with those she felt had failed to defend Britain.

On the 7th of February, Elisabeth died peacefully.

In fighting against an unjust tax and in denouncing treason, Elisabeth was not alone, and she is not alone in history.

Elisabeth's campaign was immensely aided by Leolin Price, QC, Hedley Lester, Namaste Magazine and others, whose names we do not know, who voluntarily stepped forward to help her.

It takes a degree of courage and fortitude to resist unjust law. Elisabeth had both.

I spoke with her son Beau shortly after her death in her own home in Northumberland on Saturday last, shortly after 16.00hrs.

He was hugely relieved in that he had left her earlier in the day to do a 'sprint' to the railway station to collect one of Elisabeth's grand daughters - he told me that a part of the morning the end was clearly close but she had relaxed towards that 'long goodnight' yet it seemed as if she had been determined to hang on and it was shortly after a kiss from her grand daughter that she quietly left us.

TO CONTINUE the fight for our Country, our liberty, our values, our Justice, our Sovereignty and our children's future.

ELISABETH set the example I hope you will all feel we must follow - Elisabeth, like me was not a UKIP member but both of us supported UKIP whenever possible and many were the discussions I had with her how we could try to keep UKIP on the straight and narrow to serve our Country.

It is sad that when Elisabeth died UKIP was in disaray and had become a self serving vehicle for the egos and the pockets of a few.

Perhaps those who still value the aims and principles of UKIP will consider my last posting on Elisabeth when she was alive and the letter - Beau had told her of the posting which she had acknowledged and I also discussed it with her daughter Diana in West Wales where she farms. Perhaps those who seek their own gain through EUkip might consider expending less effort to protect corruption and smearing those who still support the principles and aims of UKIP that they have most clearly abandoned for their own gain in a stlye more fascist than even their BNP contacts and associates would espouse.

Elisabeth was a dedicated, obsessive and infuriating friend and Mother who could act with great wisdom and be very foolish, yet have great generosity fettered by a selfish determination. A hard act to follow but an inescapable force for good who always sought to bring people together in her common cause but would not tollerate corruption - where needed she exposed such corruption by giving it a platform!

I well remember meetings Elisabeth organised in Calne - they were packed Bob Lomas, Dr. Richard North, Norris McWhirter, Edward Fox, Bernard Connolley, George Eustace, John Gouriet and many others spoke - so also did a director of the NFU and what a fool he made of himself, MAFF was exposed for what it really is!

I had the pleasure of speaking for her at a couple of her meetings and recall a bizarre meeting in what seemed like a dungeon in Glastonbury to an audience of pierced and tattooed new age supporters of leaving the EU - one expected some 'horned beastie' to materialise at the back of the room to denounce us all and thunder out the evil mantras of the then EEC - I well remember Elisabeth finding the idea a little too real during the coffee break!

It was a long day with an hours drive back to Chepstow, shortly after dawn when the questions ended!

Elisabeth will loose a huge hole in many lives as she was a huge personality but as the years pass it will be easier and safer to approach that hole. It is a Chinese trueism that you are alive for as long as you are remembered - Elisabeth will remain alive for as long as Britain has its freedoms.

I am hoping to ensure Elisabeth lives on studying the text of the book she wrote on Amritsa and texts on Ghandi. It is easily forgotten that as a young woman she travelled extensively with her Father in India, meeting Jinnah, Ghandi, Nehru and other worthies of India's recent history and Judge Ronald Beckett did all the groundwork drafting of India's Independence Constitution and outlined possibilities for Ali Jinnah's Pakistan.

I was in no small way a product of Ronal Beckett's Constitutional work living in the days of Mountbatten as Viceroy and his wife's 'strange' behaviour - a subject Elisabeth and I discussed several times.

My thoughts are with Diana, Beau and Sabrina whom I know and with her other son and various grandchildren. Elisabeth had said for several years she would not die until she was 84 and ever true to her word when 84.1/2 her life ended in a brief period of Leukemia that left her largely sleeping her way out of life but NEVER forget her example in a letter to The Queen during her last week. Not a letter for herself but for the rights of us whom she leaves behind.

Farewll Elisabeth - Thank you my life was enhanced by having known you and seen your example - good luck to her family and let us hope something can come of her writings, for posterity.

at this sad time thinking of the the lives that have gone up in smoke that is the conflagration that has torn through Australia - particularly some small towns in Victoria and around Melbourne.

Though the eventual death toll may well exceed 250 think of those hideously scared and damaged by fire whose lives have been ruined and consider those who have lost their lives in both an emotional way by losing a loved one or by losing all that they have built.

That in great generosity Australia has welcomed people with open arms and generosity there is now, as they seek to rebuild, no more apposite time to remember John Howard's speech on imigration.

I am proud to think of the courage that built that land and the realisation it was built on British 'true grit' - a comodity currently sadly lacking in these United Kingdoms now in a period of lost confidence brought about by the hollowing out of our Nation by in turn:

Providing the cream of our peoples to build and police, defend and enable the greatest Empire of Common Wealth ever seen on this planet leaving no Country we ever visited worse off than when we came, morally, financially or legally. Leaving Britain to incentivise the least valuable to stay at home and breed to replace the cream we had lost.

Finally we find ourselves betrayed by our own duplicitous, underhand and self seeking Politicians manoeuvered by the betrayal of our servants the Snivil Cervants.

I find it hard to disagree with the sentiments of John Howard's spiritted defence of his Country. I do deduce that neither John nor Howard are European names nor Arab, neither African nor Asian they are both clearly British & I am proud of that.

I don't know where Ant found the original but I nicked it from him for your amusement

I bought a bird feeder.

I hung it on my back patio and filled it with seed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it was as I filled it lovingly with seed.

Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue. Then came the sh... It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table, everywhere!

Then some of the birds turned mean. They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket. And other birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food.

After a while, I couldn't even sit in my own back garden anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio. Soon, the back yard was like it used to be ..... quiet, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal.

Now let's see..... our government gives out free food, subsidised housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen.

Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands. Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments are housing five families; you have to wait six hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; your child's 2nd grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn't speak English.

Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to 'press one' to hear my bank talk to me in English, and people are waving flags other than the British Flag, are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties.

Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder.

I thought this was an interesting perspective on our current financial crisis, the inevitability of which I was writing about 10 years ago and was clearly aware of when Harold Wilson encouraged everyone to have bank accounts and almost every subsequent Prime Minister and Chancellor has encouraged the populace to borrow!

This depression has only just begun and in the hands of the economicly illiterate Gordon Brown who has governed our economy since 1997 it is clear he hasn't the vaguest clue what to do.

It is clear that the Politicians and the Bankers are not just a part of the problem they ARE the problem and the myth of The Independent Bank of England is just a joke - Mervyn King is just a duplicitous castratti singing for his supper, to wake in the morning and read the headlines in The Sun from Trevor Kavanagh after he has received the script from Drowning Street.

The only part of the Treasury control given away by wee Gordie to The Bank of England was The Blame!

In this article David puts forward HIS suggestions which I found interesting:

The cure for this financial crisis

1. Withdraw from the EU, the creator of the crisis.
Ten years ago the EU, in a coordinated move with the US government, ordered its client governments to deregulate the banks. Our puppet government at Westminster complied. This laid the groundwork for massive bubbles in every market: housing, stocks, commodities, derivatives etc, in the certain knowledge that all the bubbles would burst, with devastating results for ordinary people.

Britain is in the worst position because of the EU’s attack on Britain and Sterling. We now spend £167 billion pa on the EU’s 8,500 quangos in Britain (according to the Cabinet Office) the Treasury’s biggest expense by far (the NHS is next at £90 billion, itself stuffed with £50 billion pa of administration quangos). Quangos bribe 100,000 people with £100,000+ pa salaries to smooth the way for the EU takeover, and have been instrumental in making the Treasury almost insolvent, and the Pound fall.

EU regulation cost £100 billion pa in 2005 according to Tony Blair and the Better Regulation Task Force.

The EU’s closed down scores of thousands of British businesses with its 120,000 regulations, all aimed only at Britain, and will close most of our 4.5 million small businesses when they are fully enforced.

The EU got control of our borders in the 1997 Amsterdam Treaty and has let 10 million immigrants in since then, swamping our infrastructure and impoverishing the English as they depress our wages, take our jobs, food and resources.

The total cost of the EU was probably £375 billion pa in 2007, ¼ of our GDP of £1,330 billion. It is deliberately crippling us. Leaving the EU is the first step; all the above must be reversed or abolished.

2. Close 70% of our bloated government, and cut taxes 70%
The government has seized our wealth with extortionate taxation, fees, charges and fines, and spent it on itself, supporting its own bloated lifestyle. We only get about 20% back in the form of useful services. We’ve just had the biggest boom in history – without this government theft minimum wage should be £20 an hour now. Government waste is the second millstone around the economy that needs to be cut away.

3. Go on a full Constant or Gold Standard.
Boom bust cycles have been caused by banks expanding the money supply (yes, deregulation allowed banks to “print their own money”) creating a bubble of loans. They then cause the busts by shrinking the money supply, and calling loans in. A constant standard, based on a basket of commodities, stops this.

The pound sterling must be backed immediately by a proper Gold Standard, (not a manipulated one as before) or better a Constant Standard. If this is not done quickly the EU will destroy Sterling.

4. Control politicians
Our politicians serve the EU (and implemented its economic destruction) not their voters, which is why your vote doesn’t count. The EU collaborators, particularly Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, David Cameron, Mandelson, Ken Clarke, Nick Clegg, David Milliband, Ministers, MPs who voted for the Lisbon Treaty, should be banned from politics for life and their prosecutions for treason and economic sabotage begin.

Every law or regulation parliament passes should come down to us in an annual ballot in November, and we should tick yes or no against which ones we will allow to have Royal Assent, rather as they do in Switzerland. This will stop ruinous legislation and emasculate destructive politicians permanently.

5. Nationalise the failed banks to stop the corruption
Bailout money should buy the ordinary voting share capital of banks on behalf of the British people. Failed bank bosses fired, all salaries and bonuses paid to them by loss making banks confiscated. A new law passed: No directors’ salaries or bonus may be paid until authorised by shareholders, one shareholder one vote, to stop their pals with institutional block votes continuing the corruption.

Starvation?

Gordon Brown is printing yet more money, isn’t doing the above, he will collapse Sterling as the EU has ordered: we will end up impoverished or starving, and no, they won’t let us in the Euro. We need a General Strike against the EU now.

there is just something about Khol but there seems no logic in sticking your head in a sack based on a superstition that is like almost all religions nothing more than a means by which to manipulate and control people or peoples.

It is reasonable to postulate that there has been no greater source of evil on this planet than mankind's strange need to invent gods and worship them - whether this is the idiocy of Zoruastruism and worshipping a flam but don't forget that the Judao Christian superstition is founded on 10 of the 12 commandments of Zoruaster and Islam's fanciful life style, in pretence of a religion, is merely a medieval parasite on other religions with its Abraham, Christ etc. as so called prophets and its Gabriel and God so similar as to lull the simple into a position of trust but then again no one expects The Spanish Inquisition.
The results of the fundamental lack of sense in letting man hide his evil behind a claim to belief in gods.

Judaism, Christianity, Islam or Bhuddism have all in time or by sect practiced unmittigated evil in respect of their given superstitions for some understanding of this evil that has manifest itself throughout time in expansionist waves of exactly the same thing over and over again merely wearing different clothes CLICK HERE

I stand by my opening statement - there is nothing quite as 'interesting' as khol - there are times when that alone is adequate

One has to consider that that since gods are ALWAYS on all sides of conflict that it CAN be stated that man's belief in the gods he chooses and invents yet can not - without exception - prove the existence of the basic concept can ONLY be seen as a cause of evil.

I have absolutely no objection to YOU holding whatever superstition YOU may choose until the moment when you seek to foce your evil on others and that force IS evil.

It is astonishing how infrequently those who believe they are right have the confidence to attract others to their cause by example and their radiant achievement and visible joy. Be minded that one of the most modern religions is Communism - we merely await a virgin birth and a ressurection!

Perhaps Islam can advise us how it is a religion if its greatest reward is the meaningless concept of a mechanical and transient copulation with 72 virgins and may I suggest that to avoid this rape and prostitution in service to strangers the ladies of Islam strip of to the khol and share the moment of passion in an act of love that has value, meaning and love. No woman should be considered merely a packaged orgasm for an unknown male! Some heaven, some reward well not for women and as a man I find the concept an insult that such a concept might be my motivation for ANYTHING!

Less laws, less governance, less fear and a great deal less god would clearly make for a better world!

TO LEAVE THE EU

What is the exit and survival plan for these United Kingdoms to maximise on the many benefits of leaving The EU.

It is the DUTY of our Politicians and Snivil Cervants to ensure the continuity, liberty and right to self determination of our peoples they have a DUTY to protect against crime and secure both our food and our border.

NONE of these DUTIES has a single British politician upheld for 40 years. They have drawn their incomes fraudulently and dishonesty.

This picture is a delight. It shows the artwork commissioend by the Czech presidency of the EU for the council building in Brussels.

It's supposed to be ironic, but that Mitteleuropean humour is always a bit variable.

Austria is represented with a nuclear power station, Bulgaria with a Turkish toilet, France with a big banner saying "on strike", Lithuania with five men in army uniforms urinating outwards (onto Russia), Luxembourg's is made of Nazi gold with a "For Sale" sign sticking out, Netherlands is entirely underwater, with only the minarets visible above the waves and Britain...is missing entirely.

I seem to recall the British presidency a decade ago getting into trouble for representing Italy with a pizza. Others might say this is broadly accurate, with the UK usually absent.

UPDATE: a chum points out that Germany is represented by what looks like a broken up swastika. And it appears to have been reordered into the number 18, which neo-Nazis cherish as representing Adolf Hitler's initials. Nice.

Benedict must be even older than I as he fails to have noted that the entire ghastly mess is based upon a kids model with its constituent parts injection molded by force.
